5 websites

1.
http://petapixel.com/2014/12/31/10-photography-resolutions-new-year/

My first website is about making Resolutions. I feel this website is more for the beginner photographer. It talks about being brave and just getting your photos out there, being organized, knowing you are not limited by your equipment.  I learned that it is good to take chances and get your work out there. Take the feedback and even .if it is negative, learn from it.   Also that photoshop is a photographers friend :) Also says to make sure to continue to take photos of your family and friends. Often photographers get so caught up in what they are doing they forget to capture moments for themselves.

I tried to copy the photo of the girl in the snow with the brilliant eyes blazing at you, but I was not able to copy the photo

2.
http://petapixel.com/2014/12/19/disorienting-beauty-spiral-staircases-old-abandoned-buildings/

The 2nd website I picked is about a photographer named Christian Richter. He is well known for photographing old abandoned buildings and specifically for his photos of their staircases. He likes to photograph them from the top down which creates a long winding and very beautiful visual effect that seems to go on and on.  This website clearly shows that photography is all about capturing normal everyday items but changing up the perspective so that the ordinary becomes the extraordinary.

3.
http://blog.phowd.com/2014/09/7-tips-shooting-great-portrait-photographs/

I picked this website as it has great ideas for shooting portraits. Some are general ideas that we know but I also like that it states that sometimes to create something new you have to break the rules of photography and do something different.  There are lots of tips on this website on how to get the most out of your model and your portraits that you are taking. I like the idea of how to get youre model to get out of their comfort zone. Often you have a great idea for a shot but if your model is uncomfortable and not on the same page as you it will show through in your photos.

4.
http://petapixel.com/2014/08/25/approaching-problem-style/

I picked this website on style. I found this interesting as many people think that you start out with a style. That your style is who you are and you cannot change that. I like how this article clearly shows that your style is something that is a part of who you are but is also something that you work on and develop and tweak over time. That you grown into your style after you have developed skills.

I like that the article shows that you have to work at developing your style, that you have to be actively involved in the process and that it comes with time :)

5.

http://www.rachelsussman.com/oltw/

Rachel Sussman did research on the oldest living things in the world.  She traveled the world to photograph things that are over 2,000 years old and older. Her photographs are unique to look at and really do show alot of science involved in her photography. She has also had to do alot of research to see where she should be photography and what she should photograph and then getting to that particular thing and then gaining access to it etc. She has been traveling for about 12 years taking these kinds of photos. I really liked looking through her photography work.

Top 100 Photos

1.

I picked this picture for several reasons. As an athlete the picture appeals to me and makes me aware of the amazing timing and precision of this photograph. I love how the sun is set below the net, Micheal Jordan is literally jumping higher then the sun in this picture.

This picture was used by Nike to create the "jumpman" Branding that Micheal Jordan used for his first line of sneakers.  Nike paid the photographer $ 150 for his slides from the shoot and then used the photo and "jumpman" to sell millions in product.

This photo is also from the same photographer Co-Rentmeester

Co Rentmeester was born in Amsterdam on February 28, 1936 He attended school at the Art Center College in Los Angeles, California.

2.

I Picked this picture as I feel there is nothing as amazing as the first time a man landed on the moon. This was such an incredible advancement at the time. I like the lighting of the picture which I find incredible since this was taken in outer space. The reflections you can see in his space helmet are very interesting to look at, the shadow of his body are all nicely standing out for a man standing on the moon.

This picture was taken by the "first man on the moon", Neil Armstrong. He was the one given the camera so he took all the pictures of the moon and of the "second man on the moon" Buzz Aldrin. They say this picture should not be as memorable as it is as it has no action, just Buzz standing in a small divot on the moon with Neil Armstrong visible in the reflection of the space helmet.

Neil Armstrong born August 5, 1930 in Ohio.  Went to Purdue University and died in August 25, 2012.

3.

I picked this picture as I remember seeing this when I was in New York before in either the Empire State building or one of those. It is huge and on a wall with many other pictures but I remember seeing it.

This photo I did not know was a staged photo for a promotion of the RCA building being build and the Rockefeller Plaza. This photo became famous and is used to show the sheer grit and determination of Americans during the Depression time period.

The photographer is unknown for this photo. There are 3 possible photographers: Charles C. Ebbets, Thomas Kelley and William Leftwich were all there the day this was shot and it is not know which one took the photos.

4.

I chose this photo due to how important D Day was and the fact that photographers were standing on the beach line as the soldiers were swimming in is pretty crazy to me.

This photograph was taken by a photographer that traveled with the 30+,000 troops to storm the beach of Normady.  The image is blurry from the shells and action that was happening all around the photographer and the soliders as they swam and waded to shore.

Robert Cappa born in Hungary October 22, 1913. He went to Berlin University. He died May 25, 1954.

5.

I picked this photo for the beauty of the colors for knowing that this is what outer space really looks like. I was mesmerized by the colors and the brilliance of the light and the contrast that is shown in the photo.

These photos were taken but the hubble telescope. The hubble telescope almost didnt happen. After being launched it did not work, it took a few years for it to be repaired and another few years before any images were sent back. The images that were sent back have captivated people all over the globe. The colors are something that seems corny to say but the colors are "out of this world".

Magazine Preview Assignment- Blog 3 - My Favorite Cover

I have picked this as my favorite cover for a few reasons.  Truly I like the black and white, the simplicity. I think if this cover was in color I would not have liked it as much. I was drawn to the face of the fighter right of the bat, after that I liked that there is not another person in the picture just an arm. I like the typeset it is neat and not distracting yet it is eye catching. I immediately took note of the two fighters names.  I like the lighting used to show off the muscles of the fighter as well. The black and white quality of the photo lets you clearly see that this fighter means business. He is out to win and he is serious about what he does. The look in his eyes is nicely accentuated by the lighting. I like the way they angled his body to show the muscles and make his face a focal point of the picture.

Magazine Preview Assignment - Blog 1- Magazine Tips

On your blog tell me 5 things you should be thinking about when you design your magazine cover.

1. I want my magazine cover to have appeal. I need to first determine who my target audience is so I can focus in on what appeals to that specific audience.

2. Make sure my cover pops out from the background.

3. I want my magazine cover to be efficient.

4. I want my magazine cover to arouse curiosity.

5. I need to develop a recognizable brand.

Deadlines in Journalism

1. What is the origins of the word deadline? the origin of the word is uncertain. At one time it meant lines that went no where. Later the meaning changed to mean a line that could not be crossed by prisoners during the Civil War, eventually it was used by journalists as we use it today meaning a time when work is due.

2. What impact will missing today's deadline have on you? It will effect whether or not I get a grade.

3. Have you had issues meeting deadlines in other classes? If so, what consequences did you have for missing those deadlines? yes I do have issues meeting deadlines in all of my classes. My grades suffer when I miss deadlines.

4. Do you find yourself missing deadlines on a regular basis? If so, what do you think causes you to miss deadlines? yes I do tend to miss deadlines. I tend to put things off thinking I have plenty of time to get to it and eventually it backs up and I get too much work in front of me.

5. What specifically kept you from meeting today's photo deadline?  I was doing back work from when I was out sick with Pneumonia.

6. What do you plan to do to complete this task as quickly as possible so you can earn as much credit as you can? I am trying to catch up on all of my work and do a nice job on my work to earn as much credit as I can.

1. Which of those eight suggestions do you think might help you be more efficient?  Dont get sidetracked

2. Which of the suggestions is the toughest for you to complete? Why? Dont get sidetracked. I tend to get distracted very easily and get lost doing other things and then I dont get back to what I was originally doing.

3. Are you a morning or night person? I am a night person

3A. What are some of the problems you might run into because you are more productive at certain times of the day? I tend to put things off because I am tired in the morning and then at night I get sidetracked and sometimes forget to get my work from earlier done.

4. How can you create a dedicated study time for yourself? Set a time after dinner to dedicate to homework.

5. What are three direct things could you do to eliminate distractions? Put my phone in another room when I do homework. Pick a quiet place to do my homework. Put on some music as that helps me focus.

1. Are there any correlations to taking control of your homework and time management? Yes if you set a time every day and make it part of your routine you will dread it less.

2. What is your ideal study setting and mood? In my room at night with some music on.

3. What are your biggest distractions when it comes to studying? My  phone and my siblings.

4. What three things could you do to help with those distractions? I can put my phone away when I do my homework and make sure I go to a room where I can get away from my siblings to help me focus better and make sure I have had a snack and a water in my room so I am ready to go.

Local Austin Photographer

I picked Aaron Hulbert as my Local Austin photographer.  Aaron is a young photographer that is not native to Austin but seems to have blended in quite well here in Austin. Aaron's is often shooting nature or everyday items, like bridges etc.   He shoots them with a fresh eye and perspective that I appreciate.  Aaron seems to like to work with natural lighting and catching things at a different angle. What I happen to like most about Aaron is that he is my older brother and he inspires me to try and look at life from a new lens and appreciate nature.

I picked this photo as Aaron's use of natural light and the way the sun is streaming through the trees, adds extra quality to what would generally be seen as a man sitting on a bench, boring.  Yet the angle of the light and they angle of the photo makes this one very nice photo to enjoy.

I picked this photo as it is beautiful to look at. I love the angle, the clarity. The water looks almost unreal in this picture. The lines in the rock and the colors are so crisp and clear.

I chose this one for similar reasons as the one before it. The coloring is nice to look at. The mans hair matches the background almost. I like the red hair flying through the still air of the photo. Nice quality, nice coloring, great use of nature and natural light.

I picked this picture as once again Aaron photographs something that is just sitting out in nature yet the coloring, the angle the mist etc makes it look almost mystical and unreal.

I picked this picture as it is a very different compilation. Again Aaron uses nature to make the normal look unique and eye catching. Rain, water, leaves and a person all pushed up against a glass window, yet this picture kept making me look at it again and again.

American Soldier

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?

For me it is the picture of Ian sitting in front of the tent after a long day praying. This picture shows you that military life is not easy. So many kids play military games and think it is glamorous and easy to be a soldier. It is tough and requires faith.

B. How do the images work together to tell a story?

The images really work well to show you all the emotions he felt during the year, the ups and downs, the joy and pain.
The captions give you more background and details about what is going on and fill you in more on the experience.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?

The captions add more details about who is in the photos and what they are doing.

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.

Ian Fisher has wanted to be in the military for years, he signs on at 17 years old. His friends and family throw him a going away party. He heads off to boot camp and the reality of what he has done sets in. He has tough times in boot camp. He realizes training camp is nothing like real war. He struggles with military life after a stint of getting in trouble for returning late from his weekends home. He eventually becomes a well diciplined soldier. In the end he gets married in a private ceremony.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?

Present Tense

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average?

 Around 2 sentences on average
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
They provide the basic who what where and when of the photo
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide?
This sentence normally provides details
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide?
 A direct quote
5. Do any captions include a quote?
 yes many
6. Are there any that have four sentences?
Yes the Linked in Ink photo has 4

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a  story with just photos and captions?

The saying a picture is worth a thousand words is very true. With the right photos and captions you can tell a  whole lot of information.

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?

A story adds many details that might be missed in a photos and captions, you can add in all the extra details and use language to compare and contrast feelings and what is going on.

Self Portraits and Portraits part 1

Tip #1 -Get Closer- The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects.
Tip #2 - Play With Backgrounds
The person in your portrait is the main point of interest – however sometimes when you place them into different contexts with different backgrounds you can dramatically alter the mood in a shot.

Tip # 3- Fill the Frame
One way to ensure that your subject captures the attention of the viewer of your portrait is to fill the frame with their face.
It’s not something that you’d do in every shot that you take – but if your subject is the only feature in the shot – there’s really nowhere else to look.

Environmental portrait
environmental portrait.jpg
I picked this as I like the way this photo was shot, the angle of the man sitting on the front of the boat makes him appear very close adding depth to the photo.
environmental portrait 2.jpg
I picked this photo as I like the lighting in the picture and the contrast of the beauty of the ballerina against the falling apart building.
Photography self portrait
self portrait.jpg
I chose this photo as it shows the use of filling the frame done well. I like the way it details her face.
self portrait 2.jpg
I like the unique use of the self portrait being in the camera lens itself, this is very creative.
Casual Portrait
casual portrait.jpg
I like the natural outside lighting and that the child was photographed just being himself and not posed.
causal portrait 2.jpg
I like the lighting in these and the natural tones and just catching people being themselves.
For my portrait shoot I plan to shoot my youngest sister either in my yard or in the Circle C park. I plan to shoot at Golden Hour so as to use the natural lighting of the sun as it is starting to lower in the sky. I will work with just one person so that it is not a complicated shoot of getting more people to cooperate.

Great Black and White Photographers 3

1. When I first saw Carleton Watkins photos what first caught my eye was the places that he had photographed are all outdoors places I have never been. The water really drew me in when I saw both of these pictures.

2. When I look at these pictures I see the beauty of outdoors. I see the water used in both pictures inviting and I want to swim. I smell the fresh air and the crisp scent of water all around me. When I look at  these pictures I hear the birds outside and the sounds of nature all around me and again I can hear the ripples of running water.  I can taste the water in my mouth as I emerge from a swim in the bottom picture and I can taste the berries I picked from one of the trees as I canoed down the water before I took a swim. I can feel the energy of the outdoors I can feel the grass and leaves from the trees in the bottom photo and again I can feel the cool crisp cold water with my hands as I dip them into the water that is all around me.

3. I would like to create a power point to show off the photographs of Carleton Watkins and share his work with others.

Great Black and White Photographers Pt.2

Carleton Watkins

Carleton Watkins is a black and white photographer who was born in New York on November 11, 1829. He was the oldest of 8 children. He is education in photography was none until he worked in a book store near a famous photographer and one day the photographers employee quit and Watkins was asked to look after the shop. The photographer who owned the shop was Robert Vance. Vance taught Watkins photography basics and soon realized that Watkins had natural talent.

In the year 1858 Carelton Watkins opened his own shop. Most of his photos were a type of photography called Daguerrotypist stereoviews. This is a picture of the same scene done twice almost exactly the same then put side by side to add depth.

Carleton moved to California in 1861. In 1867 he opened his own gallery. He is famous for some of his photos of Yosemite as there were the first photos seen of Yosemite by people in the East. In 1864-1865 he was hired by California State Geological Survey to take photographs of Yosemite. In 1867 he opened his own studio. He was a skilled photographer but not good at running his own studio and he lost his studio and his work to his creditor.  He died in a state hospital for the insane in 1916.

These are two of my favorite photographs of Carlton Watkins.
