Great Black and White Photographers Pt.2

Carleton Watkins

Carleton Watkins is a black and white photographer who was born in New York on November 11, 1829. He was the oldest of 8 children. He is education in photography was none until he worked in a book store near a famous photographer and one day the photographers employee quit and Watkins was asked to look after the shop. The photographer who owned the shop was Robert Vance. Vance taught Watkins photography basics and soon realized that Watkins had natural talent.

In the year 1858 Carelton Watkins opened his own shop. Most of his photos were a type of photography called Daguerrotypist stereoviews. This is a picture of the same scene done twice almost exactly the same then put side by side to add depth.

Carleton moved to California in 1861. In 1867 he opened his own gallery. He is famous for some of his photos of Yosemite as there were the first photos seen of Yosemite by people in the East. In 1864-1865 he was hired by California State Geological Survey to take photographs of Yosemite. In 1867 he opened his own studio. He was a skilled photographer but not good at running his own studio and he lost his studio and his work to his creditor.  He died in a state hospital for the insane in 1916.

These are two of my favorite photographs of Carlton Watkins.
